Martin Lagina was born on August 26, 1955, in Kingsford, Michigan, to George Jacob and Anna Lagina. He graduated from Kingsford High School in 1973 and later attended Michigan Tech University. After completing his studies, he began working as a petroleum engineer at Amoco.
Despite working full-time, Lagina pursued a Juris Doctor degree at the University of Michigan. He also worked as a petroleum consultant on the side to support himself.
